Q and A on Dermal Fillers

How can I prepare for my visit?

Do read and educate yourself on the adverse effects of the procedure. I will review them with you, but please know that they all come with some risks and some undesired temporary effects. Come without makeup. Or be prepared for me to take it off with alcohol pads. Avoid alcohol, blood thinners, aspirin, Ibuprofen, and fish oil, as these make you bleed easily and bruise more. Avoid being pregnant before your visit; if you nurse, hold off with non-organic injectables. This is an elective procedure, and none of us should take any risks. Don’t exercise 24 hours before or after your injectables. The dilated vessels in your skin can affect the product’s effect.

What should I expect after the visit?

If you have dermal fillers done with a needle procedure, especially (unlike cannula), you may look 30% more swollen than usual on the first and second days, up to one week. You may look lumpy and uneven from the swelling or dental block. Ice helps with the swelling and slight discomfort. Tylenol helps. Avoiding salty foods helps with the next-day swelling. Arnicare cream helps with bruising. Avoiding exercise 24 hours before or after the procedure helps to prevent reduced potency.

If I bruise, how long will that last?

Whenever we use a sharp needle, we go through mini blood vessels that are microscopic. They burst, and you swell up and bruise. Visible veins can be easily avoided, but each individual’s vascular anatomy is different. This is a normal response, and it is temporary. It can last anywhere from three days to three weeks.

I have an event; how far ahead should I book?

Definitely have it done one month before your event. This provides ample opportunity for you to heal and have corrections if needed.

Can I return to work after the procedure?

Yes! But remember, you cannot wear makeup because it can cause skin infections. You may experience some lumps and asymmetry from the swelling and even bruising. If you have a dental block, you may have some asymmetry from the dental block that can last up to two hours.
